Why Old Trauma Feels Like It Comes Back Around

September 12, 2025

Decisions, decisions, decisions...

Have you ever noticed that certain feelings or struggles resurface every few years, almost like they’re on a cycle? Maybe you feel anxious around a certain time of year, or you’re surprised when old memories or emotions show up during big life changes. You’re not imagining it—this is actually a very common experience with unresolved trauma.

Why Trauma Feels Cyclical?

When we go through something overwhelming, our body and mind may not fully process it in the moment. Instead, it gets “stored” in the nervous system. Later, life events can bring it back up:

  • Anniversaries – The body remembers dates and seasons, even when the mind doesn’t.

  • Life transitions – Becoming a parent, children leaving home, or facing health changes can stir up old, unhealed pain.

  • Stressful times – Because trauma can sensitize the body’s stress system, new stress may “reignite” old patterns.

It can feel frustrating or discouraging, but it’s not a sign that you’re broken. It’s your body’s way of asking for resolution.

Client Story

A client came to therapy wondering why every fall she felt overwhelmed and anxious, even though nothing “bad” was happening in her current life. Through our work together, she realized that an old trauma had occurred in the fall years earlier. Her body was remembering, even when her mind wasn’t connecting the dots.

Using Perception Repatterning Technique Therapy™️ (PRT), she  was able to shift the deep beliefs she formed in that moment of trauma—beliefs like “I’m not safe” or “something bad always happens to me.” As those patterns softened, the cycle broke. The next fall, instead of dread, she felt grounded and free.

How PRT Helps Break the Cycle

PRT helps complete the healing process your body keeps circling back to. Instead of just reliving old pain,

PRT gently works with the beliefs and perceptions formed in those difficult moments.

With PRT, you can:

  • Release old survival responses that no longer serve you

  • Shift limiting beliefs that keep you stuck

  • Repattern your nervous system to respond with more calm and resilience

Many people describe PRT™️ as finally closing the loop on experiences that used to keep resurfacing.

A New Way Forward

If you’ve felt stuck in cycles of old emotions or patterns, know that it’s not your fault. Your nervous system has simply been trying to protect you. With the right support, those cycles don’t have to keep repeating—you can step into a steadier, freer version of yourself.
